My first semester in the MSc Finance program has been a transformative journey marked by academic challenges and personal growth. Coming from a different country, adjusting to the rigorous coursework and learning environment at SFU has been both demanding and eye-opening.

Academically, the program has been intense but ultimately rewarding. The first semester covers fundamental finance topics, providing a strong foundation for future courses. If you have a finance background, you may find the material manageable. However, if you come from a different field, I recommend dedicating extra time to understanding the basics and preparing in advance through online courses before the semester begins. The classes aim to impart not only theoretical knowledge but also practical skills. For instance, most courses include hands-on projects that simulate real-world scenarios, making the learning process engaging and applicable. The diversity of projects has enhanced my understanding. Still, the biggest challenge so far has been time management—balancing assignments, group projects, and exam preparation requires strong organizational skills and discipline.
On a personal level, networking has proven crucial and challenging. Adapting to the social dynamics of Vancouver has required me to step out of my comfort zone to build connections with classmates, professors, and industry professionals. Networking events and employer meet-and-greets have been invaluable for understanding the local finance landscape and connecting with potential mentors. I advise actively stepping out of your comfort zone, as the rewards often exceed expectations.

Reflecting on this semester, I’ve realized the importance of being open-minded and proactive. While the workload can sometimes feel overwhelming, a strong support network and effective study habits have made a significant difference. As I look ahead, I’m eager to deepen my finance knowledge and gain more experience from SIAS aligned with my career goals. Additionally, SFU offers a variety of clubs and activities, including business competitions, career workshops, clubs, etc. Prioritizing these will help you stay well-rounded and maintain a positive outlook throughout the academic journey.
I look forward to seeing you all in the coming semesters!
