What a rush. The MBA Games was like going to a Vegas conference for the weekend, except Vegas is more relaxing – no joke. The MBA Games is not for the faint of heart!
I was involved in many aspects of the MBA Games: managing the Social Media and Communications among students, dancing in the Opening Ceremonies, running around for the Scavenger Hunt and participating in the Marketing Case Competition. Preparation for these events started the moment teams were assembled, 3 months before the games. The Spirit team did a great job of assembling noise makers and making banners, while the Uniforms team designed and ordered our hoodies and T-shirts. We raised $3319.25 for the Inside Ride, which placed Beedie in 3rd place for fundraising. Beedie also placed 2nd for social media (@sfu_mba_games) and won the award for “best sinking ship” in the spirit events! The weekend was a great opportunity to build stronger relationships with my classmates outside of our academic environment, as well as network with other MBA students, nation-wide. The highlight for me was participating in the case competition, as it pushed me to think on the spot when presenting before a panel of judges that posed challenging questions. The Segal Case Club and Acumen workshops helped immensely by providing presentation experience and allowing us to be aware of the judges’ expectations. Fortunately, social events were planned each evening that allowed for mingling and relaxing, with the semi-formal closing ceremonies scheduled for the last evening. It was truly a great experience and I would highly encourage students to get involved!
5 “good to knows” before heading into the MBA Games:
- You will have minimal sleep, if any. This is a fact, prepare yourself.
- Get to know your roommates beforehand, whether they have allergies or are early risers- this is good information to have!
- Days may start early- case study competitors had to wake up at 5:30am for the shuttle bus so be mindful of your schedule.
- Be open to change, you may be asked to step in for a sports or spirit event.
- Relax and have fun! The weekend goes by very quickly and it’s important to take to heart our Academic Chair David Hannah’s advice when he said not to take ourselves, or our title as MBA’s too seriously.
