Every spring, after the rain subsides from the Vancouver skyline, and the city shows its true beauty, the MBA class sets out on a different kind of journey – A cruise of the Vancouver harbour.
For this post I have collected a number of pictures taken during this gorgeous June evening, aboard the incredible 90 foot “Carousel II”. Joined by our peers in all of SFU’s MBA Programs, this fun filled evening of dinner, drinks, dancing, and sunset gazing was definitely a highlight. Check out the pics and commentary here:
This particular event attracts students from each of the six Segal MBA Programs, including the Executive MBA. This provides the less experienced students with the not-so-rare opportunity to mingle with established Vancouver managers and executives, also enrolled in the SFU Graduate Business programs. Networking with executives in Vancouver is one of the MBA program’s most attractive features. Throughout the year there are hundreds of networking events, shows, and ceremonies that expose the students to hiring managers. These, as the career centre quickly teaches us, are like informal job interviews. These folks are always looking for their next young star MBA graduate. |
Bridges restaurant, one of Vancouver’s famous landmarks, located on Granville Island in scenic False Creek. Many of the MBA students popped into the famous restaurant for a quick cocktail prior to boarding the boat. In the summer, this area is full of excitement and sensations. Vancouver’s Granville Island Market is often likened to Seattle’s Pike Place Market. The area is about a 15 minute bus ride from Segal’s campus. |
From Bridges restaurant to one of Vancouver’s more recognizable street bridges, the Burrard Street Bridge provides a beautiful backdrop as the cruise leaves the harbour. Here, a few international students from Iran and China enjoy the outer deck in Vancouver’s temperate, June evening weather. |
Our incredible MC and DJ for the evening DJ Sabu, also an MBA student and budding BC business man, joins us on the deck to survey our tastes in music. After the sun sets and our stomachs are satisfied from the onboard feast, Sebastian plans to mix it up and get us moving on the 250 square foot dance floor below. |
As the boat moves further away from Vancouver’s harbour we soon acknowledge how absolutely incredible the evening weather is. Vancouver may be known for it’s rain, however for the latter spring months and all of the summer months it is absolute “Mediterranean” paradise. The deck is packed with graduate business students who want to take in the last rays of the day’s sun and look out at what could be their future home. |
We all like to dream… but one thing is for certain, the MBA experience and our degree will help us come closer to achieving these dreams. West Vancouver is our current location, where hundreds of houses just like this one line the seashore. These properties combine seaside living with beautiful city views and accessibility to downtown Vancouver. It’s any future executive’s dream, as we all imagine ourselves hosting a party out on the balcony of our own multi-million dollar home. Around the next bend a few of the Executive MBA students identify a home that is owned by a fellow student. The homes in that area currently fetch between 10 and 20 million dollars. |
The sun sets behind Bowen Island, one of the smaller islands between Vancouver and Vancouver Island. Many international students make a point to visit these places during one of the three-week breaks the MBA students receive every semester. It’s true what they say about SFU Graduate Business students, we work hard, but when it’s time to play we’re not afraid to take full advantage of the great Pacific Northwest. |
With a full buffet dinner and a complementary bottle of wine from the SFU Graduate Business Student Association, these students sit down to enjoy their meal and great view. The sun may be setting on the day, but this boat cruise is just getting started. Below the buffet area we hear DJ Sabu warming up his turntables and getting ready to take us back home with some dancing and fun. Sadly, this is where I have to end the slideshow, because you know what they say – what happens after dark on the MBA Boat Cruise… |
