With COVID-19 cases climbing, the need for social distance is as important as ever. While fitness classes are cancelled and opportunities for in-person human interaction are at an all-time low, we must all make an active decision to prioritize our mental & physical wellness. Luckily for us all, the weather is getting nicer and summer is around the corner – making it ideal to enjoy all the outdoor space Vancouver has to offer! Nothing like getting active in the sunshine to help lift your spirits.
Here are 5 fun outdoor activities around Vancouver that you can do with your household while staying local and avoiding non-essential travel.
1. Rent bikes to explore the Seawall/Stanley Park
Stanley Park is beautiful year-round, but it is extra special in the sun! You can explore on foot, or rent bicycles to see even more of the beautiful views. Take in the ocean air, the historical monuments, the First Nations art, and the famous gardens. Keep your eyes peeled for harbour seals, bald eagles, and even coyotes as you explore the area.
2. Catch a sunset at the beach
Sunset Beach in English Bay is a great place to watch the sun go down, as the name suggests. Bring a blanket, grab your favourite local takeout, and make it a picnic! The crispy chicken burrito from Tacofino Kitsilano is unbeatable.
3. Go hiking
There are hikes all over Vancouver, but some of the best local hikes are on the North Shore. Head to the Capilano Suspension Bridge Park, explore the area and take a photo on the famous bridge — or take on a slightly more rustic trail like Dog Mountain on Mount Seymour.
4. Kayaking at Deep Cove
Take advantage of living by the ocean with a day of kayaking through Deep Cove Kayak. Plan to head out on a sunny day for the most enjoyable experience. You can rent for 2 hours, a half-day, or a full day, and rentals include all necessary safety equipment. Keep in mind that you can only paddle alone if you have a Paddle Canada certification, but as long as you have a buddy you are good to go!
5. Explore Queen Elizabeth Park
Queen Elizabeth Park has something for everyone! You can take a jog, walk your dog, use the free tennis and basketball courts, or take in the fresh flowers and beautiful fountains. Bring some frisbees and try out the disc golf course, before taking a walk and seeing the beautiful view of Vancouver and the North Shore mountains.
